The Washington Monument is one of the most famous tourist sites of Washington, D.C. and was at one time (before the Eiffel Tower) was one of the tallest man-made structures in the world! Open to the public October 9, 1888, this structure was made as a tribute to one of America’s greatest and most famous presidents, George Washington of course! Not many people know that even before Washington was elected president, there were already plans to make this monument admiring his bravery and honorability for his actions in the Revolutionary War while serving as the commander-in-chief. Bring your walking shoes because the ascent to the top of this monument is 897 stairs; however there is an elevator available too. The fastest known time up these stairs was 6.7 minutes and originally the elevator ride to the top took 20 minutes! Once your group is at the top, the view will take your breath away!
