Mt. Vernon

Mt. Vernon is a beautiful government building that is excellent for Washington, D.C. tour groups! Located just a few minutes from the National Mall, Mt. Vernon was built by George and Martha Washington and offers rich historical lessons and details about America’s beloved first president. Mt. Vernon was in many ways the first White House, which makes it a wonderful educational tour choice. The experience begins in the Ford Orientation Center, where group tours are greeted by a bronze statue representing the very first first family. You’ll also get to pursue a brilliant scale model of the Mt. Vernon mansion in this Center, read literature on the estate, and watch a film! When you see Mt. Vernon, you’ll understand why Washington loved it so much. A professional guide is highly recommended for the Mt. Vernon experience as the grounds offer so much to learn about General Washington. The mansion itself is filled with docents who share details about the house and the President who lived there. Beyond the mansion, Mt. Vernon’s outbuildings and the farm and gardens tell the story of Washington’s resourcefulness. The tour includes stories of Washington’s slaves and a memorial to the slaves who were buried in unmarked graves at the estate. To this day, sheep and other animals are cared for on the grounds and you’ll learn about Washington’s use of crop rotation, his carriages, the famous 16-sided barn, three seater outhouse, and so much more. There is so much to see in this history-filled building! Mt. Vernon will be an unforgettable experience and a great addition to any student tour.
